Ο Mr Cooper είναι ένας instrumental hip-hop παραγωγός από το Μπρίστολ, γνωστός στους λάτρεις του είδους από τον πάρα πολύ καλό πρώτο δίσκο του, Amongst Strangers. Μαυρίλα και κατάθλιψη, μια συνταγή με την οποία θα ήταν αδύνατο να μην τον λατρέψει ο kartmanius. Ο νέος του δίσκος ονόματι What Else There Is μόλις κυκλοφόρησε και προκειμένου να σημειώσει ρεκόρ πωλήσεων στην αχανή αγορά των Ελλήνων ακροατών instrumental hip-hop/downtempo/abstract hip-hop/μπλα μπλα μπλα ο κύριος Κούπερ μας παραχώρησε συνέντευξη.
Ok, the typical first question. Tell us a bit about yourself, your background, prior work etc.
I was born in Cambridge in England 25 years ago. I lived in Brighton most of my life but moved to London about a year and a half ago.
Brighton is a very middle class, sheltered town. It's a very young town. It's very white. Quite oppulent. There is poverty, but not nearly as much as other cities that i've been to. I think the place and it's residents can get into a sort of bubble mentality. I'm not saying that it's an awfull place to live, quite the opposite, but I'm glad I moved and came to London with all it's diversity in population and all the different things that come with that.
As for my prior work; My first releases were as Mummy Fortuna's Theatre Company on Lex Records. I've worked with a few rappers also, most notably Sage Francis on his Human The Death Dance LP.
I loved your debut album, Amongst Strangers. I hear you made it exclusively in your bedroom, how easy is it to create such a professional sound in a home studio?
Thanks. I'm glad you liked it. I made that record in my bedroom in Brighton with records, a bass guitar, and my computer running Adobe Audition to record and FL Studio to sequence, with numerous effects used for mixing. Personally I think the mixing on that record is not great. The mixing on the new record is better but is still not quite to the standard that I want to get to. Take a record like Radiohead's In Rainbows. That has the sort of ultimate production standard that I would like to be able to reach but I am not a trained sound engineer and I do not have high end equipment. I just have to try and mix to the best of my abilities. If you think it sounds professional then I suppose the best of my abilities is enough for you!
Your new album just came out, titled What Else There Is, tell us a bit about it. What was the concept?
There isn't really a concept as such. I didn't sit down before starting to make it and think, "I want to make a darker, faster in tempo record with more electronic sounds". However that aesthetic did evolve over time. I would attribute the difference in the sound from Amongst Strangers as being to do with my changing taste 
in the music that I listen to and feel, my change of surroundings with moving from Brighton to London and my change as a person. There was a period of a year or more of making a few tunes and trying out different directions and sounds, then I started making loops that had a consistent sound and aesthetic that I liked. These loops were then all turned into the ten tracks from the new album.
How easy is it to make a living from being a trip-hop producer given the fact that its not the most catchy music out there?
I don't make a living from this. I make hardly anything from it. I work 40-45 hours a week in an office job. Since the advent of person to person filesharing it has been increasingly hard for musicians to live off of their music. For every record that you put out there will probably be 10 versions or more copied, but maybe 10 years ago before filesharing a lot of the people that took those free copies would go out and buy the CD or the Vinyl. I think it's a shame that people that love the music of independent musicians don't spend money to support them.
Your music sounds better under the influence of…?
I haven't really listened to my music under the influence of a plethora of drugs, but being in different states of mind is such a personal thing that I think it depends on the person. If you can find a person that likes to listen to my music whilst on 10 pills i'd be surprised. A friend once said that I made "Heroin beats", but I haven't tried that drug so I wouldn't know if it was appropriate.
What software and hardware do you use?
I work with samples as source material, then I put those samples through effects and play small sections in different ways to the original sample, synthesize using the samples as starting points... All that is done inside my laptop using Adobe Audition, FL Studio and a load of VST effects. I am going to switch to learning and using Ableton Live soon as I have used FL for too long. I have an M-Audio Axoim 25 midi controller keyboard and an Akai MPD32 for interfacing with the computer.
What are your main influences?
Loads of stuff. These days I listen to a lot of the Dubstep, Techno, Ambient, Hip Hop, but also Classical, Folk, Rock. In most genres of music there will be records that I think are incredible. I love film and reading. Everything influences me.
You wouldn’t say that trip-hop is the definition of music you party to, hence different trip-hop producers always play different kind of sets ranging from electro to old-school hip-hop. What are your sets like?
I don't really think I make trip hop music. I would say that term was created by a media that wanted to create a new genre name for Hip Hop without any lyrics such as the Mo Wax stuff from the mid nineties. But then it was also applied to Massive Attack and Portishead. It doesn't really make sense as a genre to me. I'd call my stuff instrumental hip hop. Anyway, in my sets I play allsorts of music, depending on the occasion, the crowd and the feeling in a place. I play hip hop, both instrumental and with vocals, electronic music such as the "IDM" sounding stuff, dubstep, techno, jungle and older deep funk, rock and fusion stuff.

Any future projects of yours we should be looking forward to?
I am currently working on a track for the forthcoming Project Mooncircle compilation "Silent In Truth". This will be released in early 2009. I will hopefully be playing more shows to support "What Else There Is". I have released a CDR under the name "Copermahks". This is live, improvised electronic ambient music. I intend to go into another period of experimentation and changing the software that I use. I expect my sound to change again for the next album.

Γεννήθηκα στο Cambridge της Αγγλίας πριν από 25 χρόνια. Έζησα στο Brighton το μεγαλύτερο μέρος της ζωής μου αλλά μετακόμισα στο Λονδίνο πριν από περίπου 1,5 χρόνο.
Το Brighton είναι μια πολύ προστατευμένη μεσοαστική πόλη. Είναι μια πολύ νεανική πόλη. Είναι πολύ λευκή και υπάρχει αρκετή αφθονία. Υπάρχει φτώχεια αλλά όχι τόση όση σε άλλες πόλεις που έχω βρεθεί. Νομίζω πως το μέρος και οι κάτοικοί του μπορούν να βρεθούν σε μια κατάσταση απομόνωσης από τον υπόλοιπο κόσμο. Δεν λέω πως είναι ένα άσχημο μέρος για να ζει κανείς, το αντίθετο μάλιστα, αλλά είμαι ευτυχής που μετακόμισα στο Λονδίνο με όλη αυτήν την ποικιλία στον πληθυσμό και όλα τα διαφορετικά πράγματα που αυτή συνεπάγεται.
Σχετικά με τις πρώτες δουλειές μου, οι πρώτες μου κυκλοφορίες ήταν ως “ Mummy Fortuna's Theatre Company” στην Lex Records. Έχω δουλέψει και με μερικούς ράπερς επίσης, πιο γνωστός εκ των οποίων είναι ο Sage Francis στον δίσκο “Human The Death Dance”.
Μου άρεσε πολύ το ντεμπούτο σου, Amongst Strangers. Απ’ ότι ακούω το έφτιαξες εξ ολοκλήρου στην κρεβατοκάμαρά σου. Πόσο εύκολο είναι να δημιουργήσεις επαγγελματικό ήχο σε home studio;
Ευχαριστώ. Χαίρομαι που σου άρεσε. Αυτόν τον δίσκο τον ετοίμασα στο δωμάτιό μου στο Brighton με δίσκους, ένα μπάσο και το computer μου όπου χρησιμοποίησα το Adobe Audition για την ηχογράφηση και το FL Studio για το sequence με πολυάριθμα effects για την μίξη. Προσωπικά πιστεύω πως η μίξη αυτού του δίσκου δεν ήταν καλή. Η μίξη στον καινούριο δίσκο είναι καλύτερη αλλά όχι στο επίπεδο που θέλω να φτάσω. Πάρε ένα δίσκο σαν το “In Rainbows” των Radiohead. Αυτός έχει κάτι σαν το απόλυτο επίπεδο παραγωγής το οποίο και θα ήθελα να μπορούσα να φτάσω αλλά δεν είμαι εκπαιδευμένος ηχολήπτης ούτε έχω ακριβό εξοπλισμό. Απλά πρέπει να προσπαθήσω να μιξάρω με το καλύτερο των δυνατοτήτων μου. Αν πιστεύεις πως σου ακούγεται σαν επαγγελματική δουλειά τότε νομίζω πως το καλύτερο των δυνατοτήτων μου είναι αρκετό για σένα!
Το νέο σου άλμπουμ μόλις κυκλοφόρησε, με τίτλο What Else There Is. Μίλα μας λίγο για αυτό. Ποιο ήταν το concept;
Δεν υπήρξε κάποιου είδους πλάνο σαν αυτό. Δεν κάθισα να σκεφτώ πριν αρχίσω να τον ετοιμάζω πως “θέλω να κάνω έναν πιο σκοτεινό, γρηγορότερο δίσκο με περισσότερους ηλεκτρονικούς ήχους”. Όμως αυτή η αισθητική εξελίχθηκε με τον καιρό. Θα προσδιόριζα την διαφορά με το Amongst Strangers στην αλλαγή του γούστου μου στην μουσική που ακούω και νιώθω, στην αλλαγή του περιβάλλοντός μου από το Brighton στο Λονδίνο και την αλλαγή μου ως άτομο. Υπήρξε μια περίοδος ενός χρόνου, ίσως και παραπάνω, όπου έφτιαχνα λούπες που είχαν σταθερό ήχο και την αισθητική που μου αρέσει. Αυτές οι λούπες εξελίχθηκαν στα 10 tracks του καινούριου δίσκου.
Πόσο εύκολο είναι να βγάζεις τα προς το ζην όντας trip-hop παραγωγός με δεδομένο ότι δεν είναι και η πιο πιασάρικη μουσική που υπάρχει;
Δεν βγάζω τα προς το ζην από αυτό. Δεν βγάζω σχεδόν τίποτα. Δουλεύω 40-45 ώρες την βδομάδα σε δουλειά γραφείου. Μετά την έλευση του person to person filesharing έχει γίνει αυξανόμενα δύσκολο για τους μουσικούς να ζήσουν από την μουσική τους. Για κάθε δίσκο που κυκλοφορείς υπάρχουν ίσως και άλλοι 10 αντιγραμμένοι αλλά ίσως πριν 10 χρόνια, πριν το filesharing, πολλοί από αυτούς που κοιτούσαν τους αντιγραμμένους δίσκους θα πήγαιναν και θα αγόραζαν το Cd ή το βινύλιο. Νομίζω πως είναι ντροπή που οι άνθρωποι που αγαπούν την μουσική ανεξάρτητων καλλιτεχνών δεν ξοδεύουν χρήματα για να τους στηρίξουν.
Η μουσική σου ακούγεται καλύτερα υπό την επίρροια…;
Δεν έχω ακούσει την μουσική μου υπό την επήρεια πληθώρας ναρκωτικών αλλά το να είσαι σε διαφορετικές ψυχικές διαθέσεις είναι κάτι τόσο προσωπικό που νομίζω πως εξαρτάται από το άτομο. Αν μπορέσεις να βρεις άτομο που του αρέσει να ακούει την μουσική μου ενώ έχει πάρει 10 χάπια θα εκπλησσόμουν. Ένας φίλος μια φορά είπε πω φτιάχνω “heroin beats” αλλά δεν έχω δοκιμάσει το ναρκωτικό οπότε δεν ξέρω αν έχει δίκιο.
Τι software και hardware χρησιμοποιείς;
Η πηγή μου είναι τα samples, τους βάζω διάφορα effects και παίζω μικρά τμήματα με διαφορετικούς τρόπους, συνθέτω χρησιμοποιώντας τα samples ως σημείο εκκίνησης… Όλα αυτά γίνονται στο laptop μου χρησιμοποιώντας Adobe Audition, FL Studio και πολλά VST effects. Σύντομα θα αρχίσω να μαθαίνω και να χρησιμοποιώ το Ableton Live καθώς χρησιμοποιώ το FL εδώ και πολύ καιρό. Ποιες είναι οι βασικές σου επιρροές;
Διάφορα πράγματα. Αυτές τις μέρες ακούω πολύ Dubstep, Techno, Ambient, Hip Hop αλλά και Classical, Folk, Rock. Στα περισσότερα είδη μουσικής υπάρχουν δίσκοι που νομίζω πως είναι καταπληκτικοί. Μου αρέσουν πολύ το διάβασμα και ο κινηματογράφος. Τα πάντα με επηρεάζουν.
Δεν θα έλεγες ότι η trip-hop είναι ο ορισμός της μουσικής για να τα σπάσεις, γι’ αυτό και οι trip-hop παραγωγοί συνήθως παίζουν διαφορετικών ειδών set, από electro σε old-school. Τα δικά σου set τι περιέχουν;
Δεν νομίζω πως κάνω trip hop μουσική. Θεωρώ πως αυτός ο όρος δημιουργήθηκε από τα media που ήθελαν να δημιουργήσουν ένα καινούριο είδος για το hip hop χωρίς στίχους όπως η Mo Wax στα μέσα του 90. Αλλά μετά χρησιμοποιήθηκε και για τους Massive Attack και τους Portishead. Δεν βγάζει νόημα σαν είδος για μένα. Εγώ θα έλεγα τις δουλειές μου instrumental hip hop. Όπως και να’ χει, στα sets μου παίζω μουσική όλων των ειδών σε συνάρτηση με την περίσταση, τον κόσμο και το feeling ενός μέρους. Παίζω hip hop, instrumental και με φωνητικά, ηλεκτρονική μουσική όπως IDM, dubstep, techno, jungle και παλίοτερο deep funk, rock και fusion υλικό.

Έχουμε να περιμένουμε μελλοντικές δουλειές σου;
Προς το παρόν δουλεύω ένα κομμάτι για την επερχόμενη συλλογή της Project Mooncircle "Silent In Truth". Θα κυκλοφορήσει στις αρχές του 2009. Ελπίζω πως θα κάνω περισσότερα shows για να στηρίξω το “what else there is”. Κυκλοφόρησα και ένα CDR με το όνομα "Copermahks". Είναι ζωντανή, αυτοσχεδιασμένη ηλεκτρονική ambient μουσική. Σκοπεύω να μπω σε μια νέα περίοδο πειραματισμού και να αλλάξω το software που χρησιμοποιώ. Προσδοκώ πως ο ήχος μου θα αλλάξει ξανά στον επόμενο δίσκο μου.
